The oldest house in Northern Europe

The Knap o' Howar, the oldest discovered dwelling in Northern Europe. 5500 years old... Older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. When this house was built the chinese hadn't even started thinking about the Great Wall.

The techniques used are outstanding and the walls, beds, grinding stone and shelves are still intact after 5500 years. The roofing has been destroyed, but as it was made by earth and grass it's not really that weird, or difficult to rebuild if that would be the case.

Not only is the Knap o' Howar a remarkable archaeological discovery, but it's also a very beautiful, nature-friendly and practical house. Well, if you ignore the lack of natural light and the fact that the room will probably fill up with smoke rather quickly once you light a fire in the hearth.

I recommend everyone to check out this site: http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/knaphowar.htm if you want to know more about the Knap o' Howar and also the other fascinating sites of the Orkney Islands.
